cmiVFX - Photoshop Matte Painting

cmiVFX - Photoshop Matte Painting
English | 03:14:44 | MP4 | 1280x720 | 15.00 fps | AAC-Stereo | 44.1 KHz | Size 360 MB
Genre: eLearning

In this video, we show you how to create film quality matte paintings inside of photoshop so that they can later be broken into proper layering for 3d camera moves. We will even show you how to set up one of the shots in After Effects as a bonus track.

Concept
Everything starts with an idea. In this chapter, we are going to start with a basic sketch and work our way up using reference photographs and color correction tools to create the basic feel of the painting. A very quick and loose process, the idea of this step is to create a solid starting point. We will be looking for relevant photo references and elements to be used in the main painting, and roughly piecing them together to get the general idea on paper.

Groupings
Time is money. One of the most important things while working in Photoshop with hundreds of layers, is organization. By organizing your layers in a logical way, you will not only make your own life a lot easier, but you will also work much faster, and help the artists working down the pipeline find layers quickly and easily. This translates directly to productivity, not to mention sanity. Afterward, you will never need to use “right click” to find a specific layer among hundreds again!

Sky’s the Limit
The Sky is the limit, and masking will get you there. Learn masking techniques to extract complex shapes from photographs.

You will learn how to extract a city skyline from a cloudy, low contrast photo, in 2 minutes or less. Then we will learn to quickly clean the mask of unwanted elements and add details directly to the buildings and incorporate the sky and shoreline into the snowy scene by painting.

Ships Away
Multiple techniques will be used to mask the ship and remove it from its background. We can then paint in elements that were impossible to save with the mask and begin the process of actually incorporating the ship into the scene by painting on snow and ice. We will also look at the 3D tools built right into Photoshop to put together 3d shipping containers from scratch.

Color Grading
Color correction and grading can be an extremely powerful tool. With these simple, yet far-reaching concepts, we will compose the mood of the scene. By manipulating colors and contrast, adding environmental elements like fog, a vignette, and other filters we will create the final, dramatic appearance.

Layering
Now we have to clean up our PSD file by organizing and merging down layers where possible. The purpose of a matte painting is to be added to a live plate or to be animated. Naturally, for that we need to send it to camera projection or to compositing. Since we anticipate other artists accessing and working with this file, we need to prepare it in such a way that makes everything easy to find. We will flatten and rename the layers, organize by planes, apply filters, etc. Then we’re ready to send to composite.

Compositing
Bring it to life! Here we will go over the final After Effects project to show how the animation and camera were created. You will be able to get an idea of how the project is set-up and what is needed to bring a matte painting to life as a 2D animation.

cmiVFX Fusion 3D Matte Painting Extractions

CmiVFX Fusion 3D Matte Painting Extractions
Format WMV | English | 1280x720 | project resources | 1.19 Gb

For the last few years, there has been a popular "Buzz Word" going around the FX industry. FBX, or FilmBox file format, is a common 3d geometry format used by most of the popular 3D animation and Compositing software applications. With the advent of proper 3d tools inside of Fusion, artist's have the ability to import modeled geometry and camera data from there 3D animation programs. This allows for congruent camera animations and projection mapping inside of fusion while allowing for the ability of additional compositing and color correction at this level of the production pipeline. Learn how to decipher when FBX is the right option for your composite. Software used: Eyeon Fusion & Fusion Generation.

cmiVFX - Python Introduction for Maya (Vol.02)

cmiVFX - Python Introduction for Maya (Vol.02)
.mov | project files | 1.1Gb

Classes and Inheritance

This video has a focus on learning how to design class structures with your code, and why the concept of inheritance is important as you begin to develop larger tools. We take a visual look at what a class is, and how it plays such a vital role as you start working with the API later.

Asset Importer

A fully functional concept for a basic asset importer tool. More examples of class and inheritance, and working with the filesystem in addition to the python commands module.

Maya UI

We take our Asset Importer and learn how to wrap a user interface around it using the maya commands module.

Qt Designer

A feature that is new to the Maya 2011 suite. Since the entire interface has been rewritten using Qt, Autodesk has made the feature available for designing user interfaces in Qt Designer, and loading them directly into your maya script. We redo our Asset Importer to use a UI that was build in Qt Designer

Maya Python API Introduction

This is where we cross the line into the advanced waters. The python API is lower level and powerful. We learn how to set up our environment for developing scripted plugins, how to access and read the documentation, and even do a comparison between the commands module, the python API and PyMel!

Dependency Graph Plugin

Let's learn how we can create new nodes in maya, by building a very simple dependency graph plugin that can drive other objects.

BONUS: PyQt4 in Maya - Even better UI

This bonus chapter shows you how PyQt4 (python library for writing Qt interfaces), can be integrated into Maya and give you a ton of control over what your UI is can really do, and the feedback you can get from it.  We again take our Asset Importer and redo it using PyQt4

cmiVFX - Python Introduction for Maya (Vol.01)

cmiVFX - Python Introduction for Maya (Vol.01)

English | webm | V_VP8 1024x576 12 fps | A-VORBIS 64 Kbps 48 KHz | 638 MB
Genre: eLearning

This course brings the talented artist into the fold of the technical-side of Maya. Learn the basics of Python, and its place in your 3D workflow, with visual examples and real world problems. Get a kick-start on adding some automation into your life, and solving common problems in a fraction of the time. By the end of this video, you should have a deeper understanding of one of the languages Maya speaks under the hood, and how to start viewing your scenes in terms of glorious Python code!

Why python?
Learn why you, as an artist, should even concern yourself with learning a scripting language, and why Python is perfect for you! Sometimes problems need a solution that is far less time consuming than a manual fix. Sometimes just your transform/rotate/scale manipulators won’t be there to help. Lets set up a small real world problem that, by the end of this video, should be a breeze to solve.

The Basics
Exploring the syntax of Python, an object-oriented language. We take a look at how to get started in playing around with the code, the terminology, and the tools that Python makes available to you. Object types, functions, loops... Lets start building up that toolbox!

The Maya Script Editor
This will be your home during your time as a Python Padawan. We check out all the features that have recently been added to Maya 2011, to make the python programming experience even more comfortable. Learn how to access all of the commands made available to you, and how to find help on the usage of each one. We will take what we learned in the previous chapter and start exploring visual examples of the code. By the end of this chapter, you will now how to turn individual lines of code into reusable functions.

Development, Environment, and Workflow
By now, you have seen the power that is at your finger tips. You know enough to start experimenting with new ideas. We will now find out how to configure Maya a little bit to make your code easier to re-use, and distribute. We also present some more areas to be investigated down the road, in your path to becoming a Maya scripting master.

Bonus: Intro to Maya UI
Writing python scripts and tools are great. But it would be a lot more fun if we could wrap them up into UI dialogs, and give the user some visual options. This bonus section takes a tool we wrote in a previous chapter, and throws together a simple popup dialog to visually expose the tool options. The code for this UI is included in the project for you to explore!
